Fixing Ingrown Toenails

Symptoms and Causes of Ingrown Toenails

Ingrown toenails are caused when the nail is incurvated (turned in) and penetrates the skin. This can be caused, or worsened, by improper trimming of the nails, wearing tight shoes, or injuring the toenail. Early and mild ingrown nails are slightly painful and red, while more severe cases result in red, swollen nail borders which might pus over. Those with diabetes or other circulatory issues should seek prompt treatment for ingrown toenails, as they can experience serious complications from infections. Dr. Kesler offers pain-free and effective treatment for ingrown toenails to patients in Hawthorne, Wayne, Pompton Lakes, Franklin Lakes, Oakland, Wyckoff, Fair Lawn, Midland Park, North Haledon, West Caldwell, and Paterson.

Treatment Options – Fixing Ingrown Toenails

If your ingrown toenail is infected or if you have diabetes or a circulatory issue, make an appointment with us right away to avoid potential complications. Otherwise, try to reduce pressure on the nail by wearing sandals or loose shoes for a few days. Do not trim the nail unless you can easily see and access the corner of the nail. If the pain or swelling does not subside, make an appointment with us – we will remove the corner of the affected nail, which usually gives prompt relief. If this condition becomes chronic, then permanent removal of the corner of the nail might be recommended. These procedures are typically performed right in our Hawthorne office with a local anesthetic. In rare cases, the ingrown nail is caused by a fungus which will also require additional treatment. If you’re living in Hawthorne, Wayne, Pompton Lakes, Franklin Lakes, Oakland, NJ, Wyckoff, Fair Lawn, Midland Park, North Haledon, West Caldwell or Paterson, call Kesler Podiatry for immediate treatment of your ingrown toenails.
